When our sons were younger, my husband used to take them fishing a lot. We have scores of pictures of each with their first fish, and for one we have something more.
I am willing to try new things ... to look like a fool ... a bigtime fool for thinking I'm funny enough to get paid for it ... and it's a freedom like no other!
The Oscars! What a night! Is there any other business that routinely congratulates itself on being itself?
So I sit in a hotel in Seward Alaska minding my own business, when suddenly it dawns on me. … I am making a movie!
When I was young, the TV had rabbit ears, the cool video game was Pong, and we talked on rotary phones. So how's a mother to raise her kids in the Digital Age?

The Raving Redhead: Hammerin’ Cameron

February 04, 2010

I went to see Avatar today.

And I sorta loved it. In spite of my aversion to James Cameron’s condescension and his sometimes heavy-handed 2-D characters. (See: the husband in Titanic . . .) Here, you view the 2-D characters with 3-D glasses on!! But, I’m being harsh. Which is as you know, my spiritual gift!

His team and his movie have dazzled me. I like to be dazzled, sometimes.

Now, let me explain myself. I love movies. And, I’m an artist. My cuppa tea is movies where there is lots of art and cool stuff to look at, and heck, pretty colors!! I can be dazzled by them. I admit this freely. I loved Titanic, even though I wanted the couple to die really early in the film so I could watch the boat sink. Like, I wanted them to die pretty much after I met them both. Please. Stop dancing. Stop “giggling” in the backs of cars in the cargo hold. Go away. Please, so I can watch the boat sink?

But, how mesmerizing was the retelling of the haunting story of that mighty ship? How amazing? The ship is the character we cared about. And that was okay.

Sure, we’re all mad that the old lady threw that really nice necklace into the depths. (This would be a great place to insert an “Am I right ladies?”, but since I have asked you to shoot me if you ever hear me say that, I will abstain.)

I also loved Jurassic Park. I liked the book better, story-wise, (also, more people get eaten), but when I watched that movie, I thought I was really watching a T-Rex chase people in a hurricane. I give Spielberg points for that. (Because you know, he waits by the phone to see if that hilarious Teresa Roberts Logan has allotted him any points lately.) And, as amusement parks and Jurassic things go, I also liked the acid-spitting chickens. Though I was disappointed that they didn’t acid-spit all over Jeff Goldblum. Am I right, chickens?!

I am not only a fan of blockbuster movies, I love indie movies, and seek them out . . . but I do appreciate CGI wonders, in all their expensive glory.

Of course, there’s something else. There’s message.

One message I disagree with which the movie is obviously perpetuating is that eating is bad. Those blue people (the nice beautiful species in the film) never eat, not once. And they are very tall and lean and bee-yoo-tee-full. They make the Elves in Lord of the Rings look like . . . well, trolls. But I digress.

I’ve noticed is that a lot of people are criticizing this movie for being anti-military. But, the hero is a Marine. Matter of fact, I got a big crush on him, in both incarnations. Okay, mostly the tall blue dude version. Rockin’ hair. I have already gone online to find out how to Photoshop myself into a Na’vi warrior princess. If you would like to go blue, check out http://www.webdesign.org/photoshop/photo-editing/na-vi-avatar-photo-mani...

And, another “big” criticism is that it’s anti-war. But it’s not just anti-any-kind-of war. It’s anti-preemptive war, anti-imperialist war ... and umm, what’s wrong with that?

I’ve also heard it’s anti-American. I disagree. The “bad guys” are people who are destroying their own planet ... so yeah, maybe they are from Earth. But they never say it’s America doing the damage. If you’ve drawn those conclusions, maybe you’re suffering from a guilty conscience, or making the leap that it’s somehow unpatriotic to think some wars are wrong. (I tell you what, I think one of the best ways we can support our own troops is to pray that we have leadership who tries to keep them OUT of harm’s way, and never risks their lives unnecessarily.)

Guess what? I can be anti-war, AND pro-troops. I can be anti-imperialist AND pro-America. I can be pro-people AND pro-blue-guys!!

And, I happen to like the message of maybe we should take care of our planet, and be nice to indigenous people groups. It’s a God thing, actually. Otherwise, I myself would trash the planet and hate on blue people.

I mean, aren’t there already a kabillion movies where the aliens are out to get us? War of the Worlds, Alien (1,2,3, and Resurrection), Plan 9 From Outer Space, Invasion of the Body Snatchers . . . the list goes on and on.

I just don’t think we should be so quick to jump down “Hollywood’s” throat for promoting peace, and respect for indigenous peoples. What is wrong with respecting indigenous peoples? Are we THAT outta practice? Geeeeez. Especially gorgeous blue skinny ones, am I right?!

Really, seriously, I want an AVATAR. If I could be taller and skinny and have that rockin’ hair, I would totally go blue.

And I might even kick me some Sky-People butt while I’m at it.

Teresa Roberts Logan is wondering if her red hair will clash with her new blue skin, and is willing to risk it to be really, really tall and really, really skinny. She is a comic and an artist. You can buy her Bananas DVD (45 minutes of uproarious Teresa humor! Guerrilla street comedy! Skits!) at GuardianStore.com and her other funny stuff on at Zazzle.com and at the links below.
