For those of you not familiar with how I roll: I’ve been a comedian for 25-plus years and been an “opening act” for a variety of performers. Some highlights. ...
Here's a Thought: Death by Cancer
By Taylor Mason
My sister-in-law passed away last Thursday, felled by cancer after a seven-year battle. She was a dignified, lovely, inspiring wife and mother who beat the odds over and over again.
Time Out: Safety ‘Net
By Patty Elder
Summer in DC means storms, and storms mean power outages. And power outages bring out my worst fear, and it's NOT the dark. ...
Here’s a Thought: Hot Enough for Ya?
By Taylor Mason
The heat was debilitating this summer, so much so that the word “hot” doesn’t do justice to the grades of temperature we've sweated these past few months.
Time Out: Make Yourself at Home
By Cara Garretson
It’s beach week, and so far so good. We bust into our rented beach house and it looks great – the bathrooms are sparkling, the décor is charming, the kitchen is retro. ...
You Don't Know My Life!
May 13, 2009 9:38 AM EDT — Teresa Roberts ...
I was accused on Facebook last night of supporting the subjugation and murder of “women, Native Americans, gays, blacks, Mexicans, Asians” and anyone else who doesn’t share my faith. I thought it was weird that he thought all those groups automatically don’t share my faith, but thought that was a bunny trail. Weirder still, I AM a woman, and a little bit Cherokee . . . soooooo . . . where does that leave him? I was blamed for heinous crimes against humanity . . . all on a thread because I called a guy on his prejudice against Christians. I chuckled, but then I thought how sad it all was. The dude equated Christians with hate. He and another guy were waxing eloquent about how believing in an invisible guy in a chair in the sky is silly. With which I completely agree. But that was pretty much their boiled-down version of Christianity. DOH!! I just call that willful ignorance. And, it is sad. And you know what? In the process of ranting, he made some good points. Later in the day, the guy apologized sincerely. Which I totally appreciated. That was big of him. And much more than non-Christians get from many of us when we realize we’ve been jerks. Re: “Christian” history: I think we all know that there are some horrific things in “Christian” history. I don’t cotton to what those people put forth, and I put Christian in quotes a lot because I just am pretty dang sure those crimes (and many political pontifications today) had nothing to do with Christ, just a bunch of blather and horror from some powerful goobers and misguided fools who thought they should take history (and hey, while we’re at it, eternity!) into their own hands. And, we’ve given up a lotta ground, simply because we, as a society, as Americans with big mouths, pocketbooks, and media, are often guilty of throwing a lotta stuff onto Jesus which was never meant to be there. Telling people they have to be something to follow Christ. That they have to vote a certain way, or they are sending people to hell. So, I try to keep that in mind when calling those thread guys on acting like ignorant idjits. And, hey, I’m Southern, so they might not even notice I nearly insulted them! It all brings to mind that we need to have the conversation. With everyone. Even if they are hatin’ on us, without knowing who we are. Sometimes, they come back and apologize. Which teaches us something about real humility. Sometimes they don’t. Maybe we can introduce them to some other pieces of Christian history, some different Christian perspectives, or maybe show them that all Christians are not what they thought. Better yet, instead of pointing out how great Christians are, (bent on our little American PR campaign to show the world we can be cool too! LOL), let’s step out of the limelight and point them to Jesus. The real one, not the Dobson-Limbaugh-Swaggart-Republican-Televangelist-Fox-News-American-Media-paint-by-number-Jesus. The ones who really hate on us for reals may change their tiny little minds; they might not. But, we oughta give them a listen. After that, well, we can just dust off our sandals.
