For those of you not familiar with how I roll: I’ve been a comedian for 25-plus years and been an “opening act” for a variety of performers. Some highlights. ...
My sister-in-law passed away last Thursday, felled by cancer after a seven-year battle. She was a dignified, lovely, inspiring wife and mother who beat the odds over and over again.
Summer in DC means storms, and storms mean power outages. And power outages bring out my worst fear, and it's NOT the dark. ...
The heat was debilitating this summer, so much so that the word “hot” doesn’t do justice to the grades of temperature we've sweated these past few months.
It’s beach week, and so far so good. We bust into our rented beach house and it looks great – the bathrooms are sparkling, the décor is charming, the kitchen is retro. ...

Emergent Worrying

I was thinking a lot this weekend about something I have heard various and sundry friends say recently against the “emergent church.”

Now, I know a little about the emergent church, and from what I’ve seen, there is quite a range of beliefs going on there. From not believing the inerrancy of the Bible, to not being sure if there are miracles anymore – or if there ever were – to believing all of those things, but maybe wondering about evolution.  . . . It’s all over the map. Frankly, not unlike in the traditional church. What I have discerned in my readings on this over the last two years is that what they all have in common is a strong desire to follow Christ.

What is wrong with that? Nothing, from my viewpoint. All these Chicken Littles running around worrying about people who want to follow Christ. Who are we to judge what God uses as bridges to him? What about “Let Go and Let God?” Who are we to clamp his arms closed and build walls in front of Jesus, telling people they have to be a Republican-Creationist-Pro-Life-Anti-Gay-literal-Bible-believing person to be a follower of Christ? What if they cannot get their minds around all that crap? What if all they want is to say Yes to Christ? Who are we to stand in their way by tacking on all this other (quite overwhelming) stuff?

It’s reducing Christ to politics and dogma. He’s bigger than that.

I’ve always believed (because, hey, I read the Bible), that those who will have the most to answer for in the hereafter are not the ones who were sorta clueless. The ones in the real hot seat are the ones who claim to know Christ, but are glad to throw barriers in the way of others who desire to follow him.

Some people are spending a lot of time whining about the “emergent church.” What it boils down to that they are objecting to people not being Stepford Christians. And, I must tell you, that though I used to adhere to a lot of the list above, I no longer do. And guess what, Jesus still likes me bigtime.

Who are these people who want to dissuade people from investigating Jesus and becoming followers? Some of them are my dear friends. But, they are coming off as naysayers who want everything their way.  The last time I looked (about an hour ago), the requirement to enter heaven is just saying “yes” to Jesus. (See the thief on the cross.)

And does it end there? A ticket to heaven? What about how we treat others here. Christ made it clear that that matters. And not just a little bit.

If you really truly believe in a big God, and in one who is active in our daily lives, or one who has the power of the miracles in his right hand, how can you object to people wanting to follow Christ?

I don’t get it. This desire to divide those who want to follow Christ.

And, you know what?  I hope I never do.

You have drank to much of

You have drank to much of the Kool-aid

Well, then . . .

Hopefully you'll write me off as a lunatic for wanting followers of Christ to listen to and embrace each other, rather than draw up battle lines . . . and go on with your life.

I do not think you a lunatic...and I am more than willing to listen to views different than mine. Heck, I may embrace some if they shed light on where my biblical beliefs are wrong. I am not far left or right...but like to think of myself as more moderate. (Lukewarm...you know the stuff Jesus spit out of his mouth).
My beliefs are:
If someone wants to have a same sex lover let them.
If someone wants to have sex outside of marriage let them.
Let them all do what ever they so please....they will have to account for what they do in front of the Judgment Throne. Not me. My mission is to show them the way to Salvation....and then they can decide how they want to walk. I am responsible for what I do only...and have plenty of wrong paths I walk....I am not pointing fingers at you or anyone. For I have a whole forest in my eyes.

Be Transformed not conformed.

I have no problem with people wanting to follow Jesus, I want ALL to follow him... but they should follow Jesus on his terms not theirs. Today there are too many that chisel Jesus (and his words ...the Bible) down to fit their lifestyle. And the Bible clearly states that Jesus' followers should be transformed not conformed.

Transformed Not Conformed . . .

I think many of us work hard not to be conformed to the political movement which is Cultural Christian America - which claims to have all the answers for Christians. And allows for only one kind.

I am grateful for brave people who dare to question the religious powers-that-be and choose to follow Christ, NOT American-Christian-Culture.

There are many parts to the body of Christ, and our differences go deeper than having different talents.

Which is cool. God is big!

And the rest of that verse is "renewing of your mind" - which I think a lot of people forget.

peace,
