American Idol Top 5 Perform and Matt Giraud Goes Home
April 30, 2009 8:14 AM EDT — Joanne Brokaw -...
The remaining Top 5 American Idol contestants performed Rat Pack standards on Tuesday, and one thing was very clear: this is may be the most talented roster of contestants American Idol has had in a very long time. Kris, Danny, Allison and Matt stuck to the genre, crooining and belting out classy, jazzy hits - Kris sang "The Way You Look Tonight;" Danny sang "Come Rain Or Come Shine;" Allison sang "Someone to Watch Over Me;" and Matt sang "My Funny Valentine." Adam, as usual, added his own touch to "Feeling Good," but while it was a great performance, I don't think it really honored the genre. Too rock, too edgy. This was a night for class. Danny and Allison really outdid themselves, giving perhaps their best performances of the season. Apparently voters agreed, because when the results show aired last night, Matt, Kris and Adam were in the bottom three. Ryan sent Kris back to the safe seats, leaving Adam and Matt. We all knew Adam wasn't going home, but I do think it's a telling sign that Adam was so close to the bottom. See, I've predicted that Kris might take home the American Idol title this season. Of course, that was before Allison and Danny showed that they're still in it to win it; at this point, it's anyone's game. While all of the remaining contestants are talented in their own right, they're different enough to appeal to different voters. So as each one gets voted off, who their fans vote for will be key. I don't think Adam and Danny share fans, for example. So if either of them goes home, the other probably isn't going to pick up their votes. I've been saying I think Adam, Danny and Kris will be the final three, but Allison really pulled out a winner this week, so who knows. In any event, while I was away last week at GMA Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai went home; it was a long time coming for Lil and it was probably Anoop's time, although wouldn't it have been great to see what he would have done with the Rat Pack songs? Next week, the contestants are singing rock songs, and Allison and Adam are sure to shine. We're down to the wire; just a couple of weeks till the finale!
