Here's a Thought: Death by Cancer

My sister-in-law passed away last Thursday, felled by cancer after a seven-year battle. She was a dignified, lovely, inspiring wife and mother who beat the odds over and over again.

Here’s a Thought: Hot Enough for Ya?

The heat was debilitating this summer, so much so that the word “hot” doesn’t do justice to the grades of temperature we've sweated these past few months.

American Idol Top 3 - Performances and The Judges Are Gunning For Adam
May 13, 2009 6:50 AM EDT — Joanne Brokaw -...
Last night, the final three American Idol contestants - Danny Gokey, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen - performed two songs each and proved that it's still anyone's game to win. Despite what the judges think. Each contestant performed a song chosen for him by the judges, and then a personal choice. Clearly, these artists know better what kind of music they want to make; their personal song choices were much better suited to their vocal talents. For the judges' choice: Adam Lambert sang Simon's choice, "One" by U2 For their personal song choices: Danny Gokey sang "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker Kris did a completely acoustic verson of "Heartless," leaving the judges to say it was better than the original. And they loved Danny's personal choice. But the darling of the evening was clearly Adam Lambert; the judges aren't even being subtle in their support of him. Simon told viewers to vote for Adam and that if he didn't end up in the finale it would be the biggest upset of Idol ever. The problem is that while Adam is talented, his style of music doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone. And the judges blatant bias may end up being his downfall. Ryan made much last night about Kris' humility, which I thought was interesting. And to Adam's credit, he gave props to Danny and Kris, and while he seemed quite comfortable as the judges fawned, he looked like he wanted to make sure it didn't become the Adam Lambert show. Which I think says a lot about his character. I really do like Adam, just don't like his preferred genre of music. Danny was just Danny, sweet and amiable and a bit goofy. Tonight, we'll find out who goes home. Here are my predictions based on possible scenerios: I think Kris is through to the finale, hands down. I think it's possible that Adam could go home; he has been in the bottom three. But Danny's run might also be over. If it comes down to Kris and Adam, Kris scores Danny's voters and wins. If it comes down to Kris and Danny, Kris scores Adam's voters and wins. If it comes down to Danny and Adam, they split Kris' voters and Adam wins. We'll find out who makes the final two tonight on the results show! Joanne Brokaw is the host of the Gospel Soundcheck blog at Beliefnet.com.
