For those of you not familiar with how I roll: I’ve been a comedian for 25-plus years and been an “opening act” for a variety of performers. Some highlights. ...
My sister-in-law passed away last Thursday, felled by cancer after a seven-year battle. She was a dignified, lovely, inspiring wife and mother who beat the odds over and over again.
Summer in DC means storms, and storms mean power outages. And power outages bring out my worst fear, and it's NOT the dark. ...
The heat was debilitating this summer, so much so that the word “hot” doesn’t do justice to the grades of temperature we've sweated these past few months.
It’s beach week, and so far so good. We bust into our rented beach house and it looks great – the bathrooms are sparkling, the décor is charming, the kitchen is retro. ...

Accentuate the Whut?

I just read today online that the Oklahoma Tea Party, taking Sarah Palin at her “Reload” word, is trying to form a militia. Sigh. So, one way I will combat the feelings this dredges up, making me want to say to some certain dopey factions in our country, the paranoid, the loose cannons (literally), and the just plain loopy, “Get a hobby” (this is the nice version), I want to focus on some positive responses to some very negative behaviors which have been going on in our country. This first one is a response, a Christian PSA in which people affirm that they are “social jus...

Miss Beverly Hills

So, this week, Miss Beverly Hills stated that it’s “pretty black and white” that God thinks gays should be put to death. (Check it out) Whaaaaat???!!! Man, just one more of these, and I’ll stop looking to vapid California beauty queens to be my moral arbiters! I cannot even tell you how disappointed I was when Carrie Prejean fell off my “Future Mentors” list. ... And, yes, there is a “Miss Beverly Hills.” Snicker. Okay, that was was mean, but . . . guffaw! There is a “Miss Beverly Hills!” Miss BH, Lauren Ashley, was reading Leviticus, she says....

Convenient Science?

Not a week goes by that I don’t hear some Christians who are friends of mine on Facebook making jokes about climate change and/or quote, global warming, unquote. (They never take either seriously.) Ha. Ha. I don’t get it. What’s funny about that? I’m not a scientist, but no matter what little “tricky” e-mails have been discovered of late in science-land, and no matter what kind of conspiracy you think it is, we do have an impact on our planet. And I think we share responsibility to take care of it. To recycle. To use recycled materials. To not eat endangered speci...

Reading “The Mystery of the Cross”

“Christianity is founded on the mystery of the cross of Christ.” – Pope Leo the Great My friend Judith Couchman is a luminary, in so many ways. We met eons ago in Colorado when I was part of the civilian advisory board for a Christian women’s magazine launch. I was impressed then, as I always have been, as I am today. Judith is a delightful person. She is also an award-winning author, who delves deeply into subjects women care about, and she is a scholar who teaches art history. She writes Bible studies and books that I still pull off my shelves and peruse, using them...

Escargot McNuggets

So, I mentioned in my column this week how I’m a total foodie. And I love to cook, and make up recipes. I like some fast food, other fast food grosses me out. I get fast food. The concept, I mean.  It’s fast, it’s food. Yum yum, food task done. On to the to-do list. As a Southerner, I know the joys of deep-fried EVERYTHING. I’ve had deep-fried dill pickles, deep-fried ice cream, deep-fried broccoli, deep-fried squid . . . deep-fried okra is one of my favorite things of all time. When I was in Scotland, they had deep-fried Mars Bars. Everywhere. I didn’t have one of those. But...

The Gospel of Because I Say So

Got righteous anger? I do. I know that sounds heady. But I believe I honestly do. This morning I was reading the post of a conservative blogger who is a friend of mine on Facebook. The headline was “Liberalism is Communism is Atheism.” I think this is the school of thought which also thinks Nazism, Fascism, and Socialism are interchangeable with each other. Heck, they are ALL interchangeable! Right? Because why bother looking up words when you can sling crap (not the word I wanted to use, I admit, but many of you would stop reading this if I said “s__t” – ruh-roh) at pe...

Women, Men, Money, and the Coming Apocalypse, or HEY, DUDE, HIRE SOME WOMEN!!

Just kidding. I’ll leave the Coming Apocalypse to those more involved with fear rants. I know that a lot of Christians blame the “fall of man” on that ever-present temptation, women. I know that a lot of Christians believe that women should “obey” men, in the strictest sense of the word. But there are a lot of us who don’t believe either of those things. And many women who would like to see ourselves represented more in Christian venues. As comics, as speakers, as leaders . . . and not just at “women’s events”! Hey, you can check your burka at the door now! ...

Grocery Blog

Sometimes, when you are “overweight”, you are self-conscious about everything. Your clothing. Your food choices in public. Your uterine bulge. Your pantylines. (Can I say “pantylines” on a Christian site?!! Is that even one word?) I say “sometimes”, because I also wrote a popular magnet for a greeting card company which says, “Screw the diet. I like myself!” (Can I say that?) But I admit, that is how I feel most of the time. And so, that outweighs (heh heh, outweighs, get it?!) the motivation to exercise and starve. Sometimes. I just got back from the grocery store...

PlayActing

Matthew 6: 1-4, The Message translation says: “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding. When you do something for someone else, don’t call attention to yourself. You’ve seen them in action, I’m sure – ‘playactors’ I call them – treating prayer meeting and street corner alike as a stage, acting compassionate as long as someone is watching, playing to the crowds. They get applause, true, but that’s all they get. When you help s...
